James Avery Ridgeway Jr., known affectionately to all as Jim, passed away peacefully on May 25, 2025, at the age of 89. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Jim lived a full and meaningful life, marked by dedication, humility, and an unwavering love for his family.
Born and raised in Batesville, Mississippi, Jim’s journey took him far beyond his hometown, with chapters of his life unfolding in Illinois, Texas, North Carolina, and finally in McKinney, Texas, where he and his wife, Mary Jo Ridgeway spent their later years near their daughter and her family. Through each move and milestone, he remained grounded in his values and true to his kind and steady nature.
Jim proudly served in the United States National Guard, demonstrating the same sense of duty and service that would characterize his life and career. He went on to build a distinguished professional path with Nationwide Insurance, where he served as Regional Sales Manager overseeing seven states. Known for his professionalism, integrity, and sincere care for others, Jim earned numerous awards throughout his career—though he accepted each one with characteristic humility.
A gifted and passionate athlete, Jim played football at Texas A&M University under the legendary Coach Bear Bryant, a formative experience that reflected his grit and determination. He also competed as an amateur boxer and found joy and camaraderie on the golf course well into his later years. His competitive spirit and love of sport were matched by his sportsmanship and generosity of heart.
Jim is survived by his devoted wife of 52 years, Mary Jo Ridgeway; his daughter, Lori Ridgeway Giebel, and son-in-law, Jeff Giebel; and his beloved grandchildren, Zack and Kaci Giebel. He is also survived by his brother Marvin Ridgeway and cousin Marilyn Maxine Cooner Senior.
He was preceded in death by his cherished son, Brett Ridgeway; his parents, James and Elizabeth Ridgeway; and his siblings Doyle Ridgeway, John William “JW” Ridgeway, Leon Ridgeway, and Pearle Ridgeway Gurganus.
A memorial service celebrating Jim’s life will be held on Monday, June 16, 2025, at 2:30 p.m. in the chapel of Pioneer Ridge, located at 7210 Linkside Point Dr., McKinney, TX 75071.
Jim will be remembered for his strength, warmth, quick wit, and steadfast devotion to those he loved. His legacy endures in the stories he shared, the character he embodied, and the lives he touched with quiet grace. He leaves behind a life well lived and a family deeply proud to carry on his memory.
A life well-lived; a man well-loved.
